Pet Photos with the Easter Bunny Help Local Shelter
A
fundraiser for New England Basset Hound Rescue was held on March 20th
in Westborough. As you can see from these photos, Pet Photos with the Easter
Bunny was a hopping good time!
Eileen
Valinski, NEBHR Fund Raising Coordinator said: ‘New England Basset Hound
Rescue would like to thank Especially for Pets in Westborough for allowing
us to have Family and Pet Photos with the Easter Bunny! We had lots of fun,
took some really great shots and made $235 towards our rescue mission. It's
truly refreshing to work with a store that is so supportive of shelters and
rescue organizations.’
About
New England Basset Hound Rescue
The NEBHR Mission: NEBHR, Inc., is a 501(c) (3) non-profit
organization. Everyone involved with NEBHR is on a volunteer basis only and
members reside throughout New England. They receive no financial
compensation for their efforts. Like you, they all have jobs outside the
home, have families, and other important commitments. They do basset rescue
because they want to help save homeless hounds and place them in good homes.
New England Basset Hound Rescue, Inc. is always in need of foster homes
throughout New England. They don’t have a shelter that houses the rescue
dogs, they live in their homes and are treated like family members.
This gives them a great opportunity to evaluate the dog in a "home setting."
The hounds that they can't take into the foster program stay in their old
homes or a shelter until they refer people that want to adopt in their
direction.
Thinking About Adopting a Basset from NEBHR?
Below are some
frequently asked questions from the NEBHR website.
Q: What do I need to do first if I want to adopt a
basset?
A:
The first step in our
adoption process is to fill out the application on our website. After that
you will be contacted for a telephone interview.
Q: What
are the costs involved in adopting a basset?
A: We have an adoption donation of $200 for an adult dog and $300
for a puppy. It is due at the time of adoption in the form of cash or check.
This helps to cover our vet costs for vaccinations, spaying/neutering, and
any other treatment the dog may need while in our system.
Q: Can I
visit the bassets I see on the website?
A: No Unlike a shelter we do not have a central location where
our bassets are kept. They are in foster homes all around the New England
area. Once you are matched with a dog you will be put in contact with the
foster home and at that time you will be able to meet the dog
Q: Is
there a trial period for adopting a dog?
A: NO! Our goal is to find "forever homes" for our hounds. Since they
have already been displaced from at least one situation we do not want them
to be bounced around from home to home. We ask that our adoptive families
carefully consider the commitment involved prior to adopting a dog. It is a
major life-long commitment which we take very seriously. It is extremely
upsetting to the dog and to everyone at NEBHR when a dog has to be returned.
Q: Can I
bring my current dog(s) to meet the basset I plan to adopt?
A: Yes. In fact we encourage you to do so. However, keep in mind
that even though they may get along well at their first meeting, there will
still be a transition period when you bring your new dog home.
Q: Do I
need to travel in order to adopt my new basset?
A: Usually there is travel involved. Due to the fact that
our applicants and dogs are located all around the New England area it is
very possible that the dog you are matched up with will be in a different
state. We do not ship dogs or meet at half way points because we like to
give the dog a chance to meet their new family in order to make the
transition as stress free as possible
Q: How
long will it take my new basset to adjust?
A: That depends on the dog, but every rescue dog WILL HAVE AN
ADJUSTMENT PERIOD. It is important to give your new hound lots of time,
love, and patience while they learn their role in your family. You can
expect some accidents, chewing, barking, etc during the first few weeks. We
require the new family to take their adopted basset to obedience training
within 4 weeks of adopting a basset.
Q: Will
my new dog need to go to the vet right away?
A: No. All of our dogs are spayed/neutered, up to date on
vaccinations, and heartworm tested prior to adoption.
Q: Can I
contact NEBHR after the adoption if I have any questions or concerns?
A: Absolutely. We are here to assist you in any way possible. You
can contact us with any questions or concerns you may have and we will do
our best to help you and your new hound get used to being a family!
Our bassets are placed according to the type of home best suited to their
needs. A majority of our rescues have social, emotional, behavioral and
health issues. If you are not able or willing to deal with a not-so-perfect
basset, your wait may be a long one. Many rescued Basset Hounds have trust
issues. Some are not suitable for placing with children. Rarely does a
happy, well-adjusted Basset Hound end up in our care. If you are not
committed to deal with housebreaking issues in an adult dog or to provide
obedience training, you may not really want to take on a rescued Basset.
