The American Kennel Club’s (AKC) Canine Good Citizen® (CGC) Program started in 1989 and is designed to reward dogs who have good manners at home and in the community. It is a program that can help insure that CGC-certified dogs will always be welcomed and well-respected members of our communities.
The Canine Good Citizen Program is a two-part program that stresses responsible pet ownership for owners and basic good manners for dogs. All dogs who pass the ten-step CGC test receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club.
Especially for Pets offers CGC /Therapy Dog Preparatory classes on an ongoing basis, as well as quarterly CGC Testing. The class concentrates on the ten exercises your dog must perform to earn the CGC certification, sanctioned by the American Kennel Club (AKC). The test requires your dog to demonstrate basic obedience commands, control in every day situations and appropriate social skills while in public. We also address the additional exercises needed to pass a variety of Therapy Dog screening tests including Pets & People Foundation.
The Canine Good Citizen Program is a great foundation for other activities including obedience, agility, tracking, and performance events. According to the AKC’s website, “Dogs who have a solid obedience education are a joy to live with-they respond well to household routines, have good manners in the presence of people and other dogs, and they fully enjoy the company of the owner who took the time to provide training, intellectual stimulation, and a high quality life.”
A Canine Good Citizen certification can be helpful for homeowners of certain breeds who are trying to obtain homeowners insurance. In some regions, Nationwide Insurance is issuing homeowners insurance to owners of breeds previously prohibited by the company, provided the dog passes the AKC CGC test. To learn more about AKC CGC certification and your homeowners insurance policy, check with your insurance agent or insurance company.
