Big Hair Animal Rescue was founded in May of 2015 and within the last eighteen months, they have rescued 182 dogs and cats and adopted out 134 to loving homes. They are an all-breed rescue but specialize in Chows, Shepherds, Pit Bulls, Chihuahuas and cats. They take many of their cats off the streets of Boston and 90% of their dogs are from kill shelters all over the country, primarily the east coast. Big Hair Animal Rescue has a soft spot for seniors and believes they don't belong in a shelter. Money raised during this drive will help them to rescue more seniors in need.
Several of their proudest achievements have been the adoption of a senior dog. Macho, a 10 year old Chow mix, was transferred to them through Providence Animal Control after being seized as a cruelty case at a local junk yard. After four months in a foster home, and the weight gain of over 20 pounds, Macho was adopted by a wonderful woman in Vermont. Guapa, an 11 year old Chihuahua was surrendered after her owner became ill and was hospitalized indefinitely. Guapa suffered with congestive heart failure and had behavioral issues. One year later Guapa is off the medication, has been spayed, is down to a healthy weight and currently has a pending adoption. These are just two of their success stories involving seniors! Seniors often take longer to place in loving permanent homes and can come with costly medical needs. Currently, Big Hair Animal Rescue has nine seniors looking for permanent homes. As a foster based rescue, they are limited in their capabilities and typically have 30 to 40 in their rescue at a time. The funds raised will allow them to save more lives.
