As a pet lover and owner, you know how much joy a pet can bring. Did you ever think about sharing that joy with others and exploring the possibility of your pet becoming a therapy pet? He may just be the perfect candidate! Find out more about the process, preparatory training, necessary skills and certification.
A non-profit organization founded in 1985, the Pets and People Foundation offers pet-assisted therapy to residents of nursing homes, assisted living homes, special needs facilities, halfway houses and some children's facilities as well as attendees at senior day care centers and patients of various hospitals in eastern Massachusetts. Their volunteers share their pets in visits of 45 minutes to an hour long at a time mutually agreed upon by the volunteer and the activities' director of the site visited.
Each volunteer is asked to be involved in a five-step program before they settle into any site as a regular visitor.
An orientation is required before testing. The test is free and pre-registration is required. For more information, call Christine Macdonald at 508-572-1419.
