Learn More About Them

Amazing Greyz, Inc. located in Franklin, MA, is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization focused on providing for the needs of the retired racing greyhounds that are in its care, while being dedicated to finding wonderful, responsible, loving ‘forever’ homes. The kennel is immaculate and their greyhound ‘guests’ are very comfortable. The founders of the organization, Nancy Barbour and Mary Percy, feel fortunate to have very caring and committed volunteers who enable them to continue to reach out to the community and share their ‘labor of love!’

They have successfully placed over sixty greyhounds since welcoming their first ‘guests’ in the spring of 2007. Their success demonstrates their passion for promoting the greyhound as a companion animal while educating the public about the specific needs of this incredible breed. They are very proud to be a resource to prospective adoptive families before, during and after the adoption process.

Each greyhound is spayed or neutered, receives a dental…and all necessary medical care before going to his/her new home. A new leash, collar and harness set is provided with each greyhound that is placed. The adoption fee of $250 helps to defray these costs, but the organization depends financially upon the thoughtful and generous donations of those that support its efforts.

Please visit their website at www.amazing-greyz.org which further describes the organization and features these precious four-legged angels.

President Nancy Barbour explains how they will use the donations. ‘In light of the phase-out of greyhound racing in Massachusetts scheduled for January, 2010… and in compliance with standards established by the MA Department of Agriculture to accept retired racing greyhounds from out of state, it is our goal during the third quarter to raise enough funds to build an isolation room which will provide for the needs of two greyhounds during the required isolation period of 48 hours. This room will need separate hot and cold running water, heating/cooling/ventilation systems and its own turnout area.  We expect this will cost $7,500.  Especially for Pets nail clipping customers’ generous contributions will help us to reach our goal!’ She added, ‘Thank you again for your continued support and for sharing our commitment to inform and educate the community about our ‘labor of love’ on behalf of this incredible breed! ‘

Volunteering with Amazing Greyz
Pasha’s Tale: A Fable of Good Coming Out of Bad
By Molly Gunther
Years ago, while making a visit to a small town in another state, my greyhound of three years, Pasha, bolted straight through the front door and out into the night. Since I had been resting in bed when this happened, precious first seconds and minutes were lost. It was cold, dark, and neither Pasha nor I had much of a clue as to the lay of the land. When the morning finally came, I was sick with anxiety, lack of sleep, and desperation. In an attempt to pull myself together, I decided to go online and search for the phone number of a greyhound rescue that I thought was somewhat local. I figured that I could use any and all suggestions that they might be able to offer.

There is no way that I could have anticipated what that call started. Before I knew it, there were upwards of 20 dedicated volunteers calling me, scouring the local roads, posting fliers, talking to local residents and businesses, doing whatever was necessary to help find Pasha. This groundswell of support from total strangers was incredible, unforgettable, and effective. Three and one half days later, and right after a snowstorm, we found Pasha. His homecoming was literally a direct result of the efforts of those exceptional people.

With Pasha back, the question became, how can I give back, and thank all of these people? For me, the answer was to volunteer for a rescue organization and to become active in helping to find other lost greyhounds. As I had just quit my job, and was beginning to launch my art career, I had the time and flexibility to do just that. While volunteering at a local rescue I met some great folks (not to mention all the greyhounds) and was later hired at that same kennel. In total, I worked there for over three years. Now, with the steadfast support of two Amazing People (think of the founders of Amazing Greyz, Inc., Greyhound Adoption) a marriage of my two pursuits (art and greyhound rescue) has been forged! The two separate lines of CARDS WITH A CONSCIENCE were developed for greyhound adoption kennels to be used as tools in fundraising. They are also available to the greyhound loving public at large!
